Critical Psychology Community Hub
Graduate Center, City University of New York
The Critical Psychology program at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York is anchored in the Lewinian commitment that emphasizes the interplay between research and social change. Critical for us is therefore a scholarly orientation that encourages faculty, alumni, and students in our community to situate our work within historical, societal, and political contexts to interrogate power structures and injustice.

Our faculty and students collaborate with each other as well as with scholars and activists in the humanities, sciences, the arts, and in community settings to produce works that seek to advance the public good. This commitment to public-facing scholarship drives us to apply critical theories on race, genders (e.g., feminist, queer), disabilities (e.g., neuro), statistics, and others that can insightfully address urgent challenges of our time. Our graduates therefore emerge from our program as informed researchers, scholars, advocates, and leaders in a range of societal spheres including in the academy, advocacy, and public policy, exemplifying our program’s commitment to educating public scholars who strive for a more just society in both innovative and practical ways.
The Critical Psychology curriculum cultivates a deep intra- and inter-disciplinary understanding of psychology. Drawing from and challenging conventional paradigms, our innovative critical methods courses allow students to engage with a spectrum of qualitative and quantitative approaches. They learn to develop scholarship that examines complex social issues to challenge conventional boundaries and actively engage with the world. This equips students with analytical tools necessary to contribute meaningfully to the discipline of psychology and to society.
This unique integration of theory and practice empowers the emerging scholars in our program to engage rigorously and effectively with key societal challenges. Therefore, our program is widely recognized as a vibrant and collaborative intellectual community where scholarship and activism produce ground-breaking intellectual and practical work. This, in turn, inspires our students to imagine and work toward futures not yet conceived.
